West Rock Ridge

I did this one, and it shot straight to the top: West Rock is my favorite hike so far, just ahead of Mount Higby. That's saying something, because Higby set the bar. And the kicker is that it's also the closest real ridge to the house, only about twenty minutes away in Hamden, so this is my new go-to.

The bottom of this hike is the busiest, most family scene of any of my trips. Kids and families everywhere, a bathroom right at the trailhead, and dogs on leashes. Down along the flat lower trail is Konolds Pond, where I watched people fishing, and there were even a couple of kid-built stick forts in the woods. If you've got little ones, that easy loop down by the water is a great, low-effort morning on its own. But then you leave the pond and climb, and within a few minutes it flips. Up on the ridge I had it to myself. That contrast, a friendly pond down low and solitude up top, is the whole trick of this place: park down by the water, climb, and lose the crowd.

A busy family pond at the bottom, fishing and all, then you climb and the ridge goes silent but for chickadees. Twenty minutes from home, and it's my new favorite hike.

The climb up to the ridge is a real workout, a legit up. I'll be honest, my legs are getting used to these climbs now, and this one felt earned in a good way. The loop I did, the Gold-Blue-Red loop, runs the western edge of the ridge, so the views look out over a big green valley, wetland and forest rolling out to the hills, with the Naugatuck highlands I'd spotted from up top sitting right on the horizon. Straight take: the views are good, but Higby's are better. Higby gives you those peekaboo looks the whole climb, and this loop's payoff comes more from the cliff edges once you're up. Still a wide-open, beautiful look, and the traprock cliffs give it real drama.

So why is it my favorite if the views trail Higby a bit? Because the whole package wins: the closest ridge to home, a climb that earns it, cliff-top scenery, and that quiet-up-top payoff, all twenty minutes away. Coming back down the switchbacks it was dead silent, just chickadees, no motors, no airplanes, nothing, the kind of quiet you drive out of your way for, and that sealed it. One note if you want the classic New Haven, harbor, and Long Island Sound skyline shot, that's from the South Overlook at the south end, which you can also reach by the seasonal Regicide Drive, so it's the busier spot. My loop gave me the quieter western views instead. Judges Cave, the boulder jumble where two judges who signed a king's death warrant hid out in the 1600s, is up on the ridge too. Wentworth's in Hamden is the ice cream reward. New favorite, and the one I'll do most, because it's right here.
