The quiet pick. A short, steep traprock climb on the blue-blazed Metacomet Trail to clifftop views west over the Pequabuck valley toward the Berkshires. Farmington. Next on the list.

Difficulty
Moderate to challenging. A steep climb for the first mile gets the elevation out of the way, then it's a rocky ridge walk out to the cliff views.

The trip
This is the plan, not done yet, so take the notes as a plan. I went looking for a traprock ridge with real cliff views that wouldn't be a zoo, and Rattlesnake Mountain in Farmington kept coming up as the quieter one. It's the same blue-blazed Metacomet ridge family as my favorites, just farther north and less trafficked than the marquee spots, which is exactly what I wanted.
Here's what I've pieced together. You park off Colt Highway, Route 6, and pick up the blue blazes. The climb is honest, steep for about the first mile, and then you're basically done with the elevation. From there it's a rocky ridge walk out to the payoff: clifftop overlooks facing west over the Pequabuck River valley, with Farmington below and the eastern wall of the Berkshires off on the horizon. If you tack on the short spur, you also pass Will Warren's Den, a jumble of boulders that's a local legend spot.
A steep first mile, then a rocky ridge to open clifftop views west over the valley toward the Berkshires. One of the quieter traprock ridges.
The one thing to plan for is the trailhead. Navigate to the Colt Highway trailhead, not the summit, and note that the trail entrance is on one side of the road and the parking is on the other, which trips people up. The lot is small and fills on weekends, so an early start is the move, and it's a big part of why I picked this one for a quiet hike.
So the plan is: get there early, grind out the steep first mile, then enjoy the ridge and the western cliff views without the crowds. Short, a real climb, and open views, my kind of hike. I'll come back and write the real trip, with ratings, once I go.

Colt Highway trailhead
Early morning Β· Start herePark in the small lot off Colt Highway (navigate to the Colt Highway (Route 6) trailhead, not the summit). The Metacomet trail entrance is on one side of the road and the parking is on the other, so look across the road for the blue blazes. Go early, the lot fills on weekends.

The steep first mile
Morning Β· About 1 mi upThe blue-blazed Metacomet climbs steeply for about the first mile, which gets nearly all the elevation out of the way early. Rocky footing. After that it eases into a ridge walk.
- 3Lookout
The clifftop views (and Will Warren's Den)
At the top Β· As long as the view holds youThe payoff: open traprock clifftops facing west over the Pequabuck valley, Farmington below and the Berkshire escarpment on the horizon. Add the short spur to Will Warren's Den, a boulder jumble of local legend. Steep, unrailed cliff edges, so keep kids well back.

Dad tips
- βΈThis is the quieter traprock ridge of the bunch, which is why I picked it. Real cliff views without the crowds you get at the marquee spots, especially if you go early.
- βΈNavigate to the Colt Highway (Route 6) trailhead, not the summit. The trail entrance is on one side of the road and the parking is on the other, which confuses people. The lot is small and fills on weekends.
- βΈThe climb is steep but short. You knock out the elevation in about the first mile, then it's a rocky ridge walk to the views.
- βΈThe payoff is west-facing clifftop views over the Pequabuck valley toward the Berkshires. Add the short Will Warren's Den spur for the local-legend boulder cave.
- βΈReal cliff edges with no railings. Keep kids well back, I'd call it a seven-and-up.
- βΈGrippy shoes for the steep rocky climb, and water since the clifftop is open and exposed. Dog friendly on a leash.
- βΈIt's about 50 minutes out, the farthest of my ridge hikes, but the trade is a quieter trail.
What to bring
- βSturdy hiking shoes with grip (steep, rocky climb)
- βPlenty of water (exposed clifftop)
- βYour phone with the blue-blazed route downloaded
- βA hat and sunscreen for the open cliffs
- βA snack or lunch to eat at the overlook
Best time to visit
Fall for the foliage off the cliffs. The clifftop is open and exposed, so bring water in summer.

Ragged Mountain
Real cliff-top views over Wassel Reservoir, with views along the way, plus the rock scrambles I'd been after. Do it as an out-and-back to the clifftop for the views, because the loop's back half is all woods with the trail markings missing.

Beacon Cap
A quiet, all-woods loop to a striking glacial boulder in the Naugatuck State Forest. Good exercise and total solitude, but no views the whole way except the one you climb the rock for. Honestly, not my favorite.

West Rock Ridge
My favorite hike, just ahead of Mount Higby, and it's the closest real ridge to home. A busy family pond at the bottom with fishing and a bathroom, then you climb and the ridge is all yours, quiet enough to hear the chickadees. About 20 minutes away.
