The trip
This is the trip for the Saturday when everyone slept badly and nobody wants to commit to a real drive. Twenty minutes up Route 8 and 84, park the car, and the falls are right there. No hike required to see the main event.
Papermill Pond sits at the top with a little covered bridge you cross to start the loop. The falls tumble out of the pond in a series of short drops, and there are enough safe vantage points that you can let the kids lead without your heart rate spiking.
Twenty minutes of driving for a covered bridge, a waterfall, and turtles. Some Saturdays don't need to be complicated.
The loop trail around the pond is flat and shaded. There's a spur up to an old fire tower if the crew has energy; it's short but steep, and the tower itself is the reward. On a clear day you can see a long way.
The turtles are the sleeper hit. Bring a snack, sit on a bench by the pond, and count heads popping up. We got to eleven before someone needed a bathroom.

Dad tips
- βΈThis is the best rain-check trip in the area. If a bigger plan falls through, you can be here by 10 and home by lunch.
- βΈThe fire tower spur is short but real. Sneakers, not sandals.
- βΈBathrooms are seasonal portables. Plan accordingly with small kids.
- βΈThe bench on the far side of the pond is the best snack spot and most people never walk that far.
What the kids enjoyed

- βThe covered bridge

Ragged Mountain
The biggest challenge on my list. A rugged traprock loop with real rock scrambles and bare-cliff views down onto Wassel Reservoir and Hart Ponds, in Berlin. About 35 minutes away. Next up.

Beacon Cap
A quiet, all-woods loop to a striking glacial boulder in the Naugatuck State Forest. Good exercise and total solitude, but no views the whole way except the one you climb the rock for. Honestly, not my favorite.

West Rock Ridge
My favorite hike, just ahead of Mount Higby, and it's the closest real ridge to home. A busy family pond at the bottom with fishing and a bathroom, then you climb and the ridge is all yours, quiet enough to hear the chickadees. About 20 minutes away.
