The trip
This is the closest hike to the house, about fifteen minutes away in Oxford, and that proximity is honestly the best thing about it. Rockhouse Hill Sanctuary is a big Oxford Land Trust preserve with over fifteen miles of trails a local conservation crew has built and kept up for years. I finally went and walked it, so here's the straight report.
The good: it's easy, it's quiet, and it's a genuinely great trail for kids and dogs. Parking was simple, a small lot off Quaker Farms Road that holds about six cars. The trails are well marked, so I never had the get-lost worry I'd braced for. It's pretty flat with a mix of dirt and some rock underfoot, no real climbing, the kind of walk a little kid can handle on their own two feet. No strollers, but any kid who can walk a trail would be fine, and there were dogs out enjoying it too. Two things kids would love that I didn't expect: a pair of young deer grazing right off the trail that let me get close, and a quiet little pond (Van Wettberg Pond) tucked in the woods. The preserve was dedicated as the David W. McKane Sanctuary in 2025, and you can tell it's cared for.
The closest hike to home and the easiest of the bunch. Great for kids and dogs, but pretty flat with one lookout, and it didn't grab me.
The honest part: it just didn't grab me. There's no real challenge to it, and there's only the one lookout, so it doesn't have the thing I chase on these hikes. The stuff I love about Higby and Chauncey, the climb that makes you work and the views that keep coming, isn't here. This is a flat, pleasant, well-kept walk in the woods that ends at a single view. Perfectly nice. Just not a place I'd go out of my way to do again.
So where does it land? If you've got young kids or a dog and you want an easy, no-stress, close-to-home walk, this is a solid pick, and Rich Farm Ice Cream is right there in Oxford for after. For me, chasing the challenge and the views-the-whole-way ridges, it was a one-and-done. Ranking it honestly, it sits below the others I've done. Not bad, just not for me.

Quiet, too. Keep an eye out for deer, and there's a small pond (Van Wettberg Pond) tucked in the trees that's a nice pause with kids.

Partway around · A quick stopThe one view of the walk, a look out over the Housatonic valley from the rocks. It's a nice spot to stop, but it's the only lookout on the route, so set expectations to one payoff rather than the running views you get on a ridge like Higby.

- ▸Wildlife win for the kids: I came up on a couple of young deer right off the trail, and there's a quiet pond in the woods. That plus the ice cream after is a solid, low-effort day with little ones.

My favorite hike, just ahead of Mount Higby, and it's the closest real ridge to home. A busy family pond at the bottom with fishing and a bathroom, then you climb and the ridge is all yours, quiet enough to hear the chickadees. About 20 minutes away.
