The trip
Episode four assembles the eastern cluster: three stops this site already loves (the submarine, the Book Barn, Mystic's orbit) plus the connective tissue that turns them into one day instead of three separate trips.
The shape: free submarine in the morning while everyone's fresh, Mystic for lunch, the drawbridge performing its hourly miracle, cones timed to the lift, an afternoon stroll, and the bookstore-with-goats as the drive-home closer.
By 3 PM the kids have walked through a nuclear submarine, watched a bridge lift a whole road into the sky, and eaten ice cream named after that bridge. Nobody has asked for a screen. This is the varsity day trip.
It's the longest drive of the series so far, which is exactly why the itinerary is built dense: once you're out east, everything is fifteen minutes from everything, and the day repays the highway time twice over. This is the one to save for a Saturday with a good forecast and a full tank.

Morning · 2-2.5 hrsStart in Groton with the free one: the museum's working periscopes, then the walk through USS Nautilus, the first nuclear submarine and the boat that went under the North Pole. Museum first, sub second; the sub is the finale and nothing tops it. Check hours before driving, it's Navy-run and keeps federal holidays.
Rainy swap: It's indoors. It IS the rainy swap. Linger longer.

Lunch · 1 hrFifteen minutes east to downtown Mystic. Mystic Pizza if the line is sane (the slice is fine, the movie story is the point), or any of the main-street options. Sit where you can see the drawbridge if you can manage it, because of what happens next.

Early afternoon · 20 minThe Mystic River bascule bridge raises on a schedule (roughly :40 past the hour in season) with counterweights the size of small houses swinging skyward while boats parade through. Position the kids on the riverwalk five minutes early. It's the best free show in eastern Connecticut and most tourists miss it by accident.

Immediately after the bridge · 30 minThe shop faces the bridge it's named after. The move: order cones BEFORE the bridge goes up, then watch the lift mid-cone. This is the best-timed ice cream in the state and the kids will retell it as one continuous miracle.

Olde Mistick Village or Mystic River Park
Mid-afternoon · 1 hrThe free-energy burn: Olde Mistick Village is a walkable shopping village with a duck pond and enough space to let the crew off-leash (figuratively), or stay riverside at Mystic River Park and watch boats. The aquarium is next door if you're converting this into the big-ticket version; it deserves its own day.
Rainy swap: The aquarium upgrade becomes tempting in rain. Budget accordingly or hold the line.

The closer · 45-60 minFifteen minutes west on the way home: the outdoor used bookstore with resident cats and supervising goats. Set the book budget in the car. Everyone sleeps the rest of the ride home clutching a paperback. Perfect ending.

- ▸The aquarium next to Olde Mistick Village is a gravitational field. Decide BEFORE the trip whether today includes it, or the gift-shop physics will decide for you.
